The study tour to Orchha, a heritage city in Madya Pradesh, conducted from 18th to 20th September 2025, achieved its objective of integrating academic learning with lived experience. By situating students within a heritage-rich environment, the tour allowed them to witness the interplay of architectural tradition, cultural continuity, and contemporary challenges. The insights gained will directly shape their design proposals in their ongoing design studio , ensuring that they evolve as architects who are not only technically competent but also socially and culturally sensitive. Beyond the semester, the experience is expected to instill a deeper awareness of the responsibilities associated with designing in heritage contexts and responsibilities that demand respect for history while responding to present and future needs.
The students of B. Arch VII Semester, Section A from the School of Planning and Architecture,
Bhopal, embarked on a three-day study tour to Indore from 22nd to 24th August 2025. This tour
was conducted as part of the Architectural Design – VII Studio, where students are required to
gain exposure to the complexities of building services in large-scale urban projects. The purpose
of the tour was to provide students with firsthand experience of the planning, design, and
execution of building services in hotels, hospitals, and malls. Particular emphasis was given to
understanding mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), HVAC systems, circulation patterns, and
fire safety mechanisms, as these aspects form the backbone of service-oriented buildings.
The tour not only enhanced technical knowledge but also encouraged students to critically
analyze service integration in contemporary architecture. The diverse set of case studies exposed
them to the challenges of efficiency, sustainability, and comfort in modern urban infrastructure.
The Architectural Study immersed itself in exploring various facets of historic buildings in Udaipur, a city known for its hot and arid climate. This included a detailed examination of architectural elements and their spatial organization, alongside an exploration of both physical and abstract dimensions of space shaped by these elements. Students conducted thorough investigations into sensory experiences within these spaces, encompassing considerations of Light and Shadow, Color, Temperature, Ventilation, Sound, Smell, Taste, Texture, and Touch. They also delved into appreciating the poetic and liberating qualities inherent in architectural space, understanding it as a symbolically and physically significant element. This understanding was further enriched by analyzing symbolic and metaphorical associations .
The tour aims to comprehensively explore and understand the architectural and cultural contexts of Mandu and Maheshwar, integrating historical, spatial, and social dimensions into the analysis and documentation processes. The focus was on a holistic analysis of architectural contexts enriched by the interplay between buildings, terrain, and human interaction. It began with meticulously observing and studying key architectural elements such as columns, arches, and vaults, discerning their structural and aesthetic significance within historical and contemporary frameworks. The exploration deepens into understanding its rich history and current dynamics. Through detailed investigation, the aim was to develop spatial narratives that intertwine Mandu's historical evolution, folklore, built environment, terrain features, ecological aspects, and the evolving gender dynamics embedded within its societal fabric.
The primary objective of the tour was to provide the students with opportunities to acquire knowledge and evaluate the design of institutions, accommodations (hostels, hotels, resorts), heritage buildings, monuments, and settlements in and around Ahmedabad. The tour aimed to expose the students to both ancient and modern planning principles applied in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. The diverse range of buildings in these locations provided ample opportunities for students to study and analyze architectural works in terms of design elements and principles, spatial organization types, and construction techniques .
The architectural study tour provided a comprehensive exploration of housing typologies across Delhi and Udaipur. Students engaged in site visits to diverse locations, including DDA housing, luxury high-rises like Tata Primanti in Gurugram, and cultural landmarks such as the Red Fort and City Palace in Udaipur. These visits enriched their understanding of architectural nuances, cultural influences, and societal impacts on residential spaces. The tour emphasized experiential learning, allowing students to directly observe and analyze design principles, spatial organization, and community dynamics. Overall, the journey was a transformative educational experience, fostering deeper insights into architectural practice and cultural heritage.
